Pray with TVUU

A UU pastor friend of mine sent me this link, although it’s all over the news by now. Please pray for this church, their community, and our larger community. My heart aches.

UPDATE: My friend notes there is now a facebook page, and an address to send cards/letters to: Tennessee Valley UU Church, 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919-4624

Definition of mission

A quote from Barry Taylor (204):

… mission might be the journey of Christians into all the world to discover the liberating mission of Jesus in transforming encounter with others, and discovery is almost always the result of adventure, creativity, and risk.

Lately I’ve been talking about mission in ways somewhat similar, particularly doing a “riff” off the Matthew 28 verse where Jesus urges his disciples to “go and make disciples” — and my sense that a better translation of “disciple” for us might be learner. Learning, of course, is a journey fraught with opportunities for transformation, where the person transformed may more often be oneself, rather than anyone else! In any case, because of all of this I like the Taylor quote.

A short economics primer

Robert Reich offers a great short piece on the differences in underlying economic philosophies between Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama.

Colbert on Lambeth

Ok, so this is not only amusing, but better coverage in some ways than anything I’ve caught a glimpse of in the regular news.

Here’s a comprehensive list of useful sites for teaching kids with various kinds of special needs. While it’s not oriented towards religious educators, it’s still very useful in that context, too.
