"Only 17 percent of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who say their religious faith is extremely important in shaping how they live their daily lives report that all or most of the movies and videos they watch are R-rated. In addition, 26 percent of those who say their religious faith is very important in shaping how they live their daily lives report that all or most of the movies and videos they watch are R-rated. In contrast, 48 percent of teens who say that religious faith is not important at all in shaping how they live their daily lives report that all or most of the movie and videos they watch are R-rated. Less than 1 percent of teens surveyed reported watching no movies."
More than anything this statistic makes me wonder if kids even watch PG-13 movies any more?
Posted by hessma at May 24, 2005 08:52 PMI have a slightly different dynamic in my home, which I share with an elderly parent...I find myself having to censor the films we watch together for her sake; she says, "Oh, I can handle that sex-and-violence stuff," but she really can't, LOL; at the risk of being very theologically incorrect, I can't help thinking that this is sort of karmic payback for what we do to our parents when we're young;-).)
Anyhow...the statistic I found troubling was that only 17 percent of teens say that their faith informs their daily lives. On my blog I have an entry entitled "Saved For What?" -- a favorite question from one of my campus pastors long, long ago. I guess that's what I'd like to ask these kids.
